A Los Angeles trial and appellate boutique, Larson O’Brien represents business entities as well as individuals in a variety of commercial and white-collar criminal matters. Stephen Larson secured a complete defense verdict in the form of acquittals for client Jeffrey Burum, managing partner of Colonies Partners LP, after a 10-month jury trial of case jointly prosecuted by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office and the State Attorney General’s office. The government alleged that the defendants accepted bribes to secure a $102 million settlement in a dispute related to Colonies Partners residential and commercial development. Larson also successfully defended R.J. Noble Company, a Southern California asphalt manufacturer, in connection with a criminal prosecution arising from the death of an R.J. Noble Company employee during an industrial accident. The company was charged by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office with felony industrial homicide charges. Following the filing of a demurrer and numerous meetings with the District Attorney, Larson obtained a civil compromise resolution and dismissal of all felony charges. In the plaintiff capacity, Larson obtained a $40 million settlement for State of Arizona in lawsuit against Volkswagen for damages and restitution related to the “Diesel Dupe” scandal. Larson also recently won a $10 million jury verdict against Rose Bowl Aquatic Center, arising from their alleged negligence after minor client was molested on the premises. Robert O’Brien was part of a team that secured dismissal of a putative class-action lawsuit against a national mortgage service company, alleging that the company violated California’s fair debt collection practices act. O’Brien and his team successfully argued that the defendants were not “debt collectors” under California law.
