Sharon M. Woods has over 40 years of experience as a trial lawyer in both state and federal courts around Michigan and across the country. She was the first female attorney at Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker, PLLC, which she joined in 1972 after having been the first female clerk in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan. She served as the Managing Partner/Member of her law firm for 24 years and continues to serve as the head of the litigation department of her firm. Sharon was elected a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1989 and was elected to its national Board of Regents from 2001-2005. She was elected a fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers in 2003.
Sharon was recognized in the Best Lawyers in America as The Best Lawyer in Detroit – Construction Litigation (2012), Real Estate Litigation (2013), Professional Malpractice Defense (2014) and has been included in the Best Lawyers in America publication since 1991 for Bet-the-Company Litigation, Commercial Litigation and Professional Malpractice Law. She has also been recognized in Chambers USA, Client's Guide to America's Leading Lawyers, for Commercial Litigation and Benchmark (both Plaintiff and Defense Lawyers for Commercial Litigation) and Top Ten Women Lawyers in Michigan (2017). She has been recognized by Benchmark as one of the Top 250 Woman in Litigation for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.
In addition to her active trial practice, Sharon regularly sits as a neutral arbitrator by court appointment, for the American Arbitration Association and the CPR- International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution and also regularly serves as a mediator and facilitator for cases pending in Michigan and throughout the U.S. and abroad.
Sharon graduated with a Bachelor's Degree (Magna cum laude) in Biology and Mathematics from the University of Detroit and went on to received her law degree (Summa cum laude) from the University of Detroit. She has served as the President of the Historical Society for the U.S. District Court in Detroit and was on the Board of Directors of The Detroit Club for 10 years, including serving as the Club's president in 2000-2001. She is married to Thomas M. Woods, an attorney, and they reside in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
