Mike Shuster is widely recognized as one of New York’s leading trial lawyers. He represents clients in disputes that touch on a wide range of legal and business issues, often feature a cross-border element, and universally involve questions of great value to his clients. He has secured favorable rulings in a wide range of trial and appellate settings, including his recent representation of bank trustees in a bench trial that resulted in a verdict of $2.4 billion from the Lehman estate.
Current matters include, among others, the representation of Visa in massive antitrust class action and opt-out litigation; Valassis in a billion-dollar dispute with News Corp; one of the world’s preeminent law firms and two of its partners in their defense of high-profile malpractice claims and related litigation; a director of Sears in connection with claims brought by a committee of creditors; a major government-sponsored enterprise in its portfolio of claims relating to RMBS; XPO Logistics in a dispute with Elliott Capital; and a family seeking to recover looted art from the Hungarian government.
Mike has represented numerous clients in high-profile and highly contested domestic and cross-border matters across a variety of disciplines and in a multiplicity of fora, and has successfully tried cases and argued appeals in federal and state courts throughout the United States. Mike recently prevailed in a Second Circuit argument on behalf of holders of Argentine debt. He has extensive experience in and has secured favorable awards in arbitrations under the ICC, AAA, and other rules. Mike has represented Alstom Group, Amerada Hess, Banco Santander, Bank of New York Mellon, Comcast, Kenneth Cole, Croatia, General Re, Landoil (Philippines), Mega Brands, Och Ziff, Raytheon, Royal Bank of Canada, Saudi Refining, Swiss Bank, Taisho Pharmaceuticals, UBS, and numerous others.
For several years, he has been ranked by Benchmark Litigation and Chambers USA, which has reported that he is “fantastic with clients, has super judgment, and has the right style and charisma for a courtroom litigator.” Mike was recently recognized as one of 25 Litigation Trailblazers by the National Law Journal.
Before co-founding Holwell Shuster & Goldberg, Mike was a litigation partner at an Am Law 200 firm and at White & Case, where he served as Global Head of Commercial Litigation.
