Robert articled at the Alberta Court of Appeal, is a former partner at Bennett Jones and former managing partner and firm chairman at JSS Barristers. He has presented at national and local seminars for the legal profession on class actions and other litigation issues. In 2012 he was awarded the Queen’s Counsel designation.
Robert practices civil litigation exclusively, focusing on class actions and corporate/commercial litigation, including contract disputes, securities disputes, fraud and conspiracy litigation, injunctions, oil & gas litigation, defamation, real estate and construction litigation and appeals. Recently Robert was successful lead counsel for the Plaintiff in a 6 week civil conspiracy trial.
Robert has also appeared numerous times as counsel before regulatory tribunals, including various professional disciplinary bodies, the Alberta Securities Commission and the SDAB.
Robert has extensive experience as a strategic advisor and advocate. He has appeared before all levels of the Alberta courts, and regularly before administrative boards and commissions. Robert has appeared as counsel on numerous class actions, both for plaintiffs and defendants, including for plaintiffs in both the Aurelian and Poseidon Class Actions and for defendants in various payday loans Class Actions. He has also been plaintiffs’ counsel in numerous options backdating and securities fraud actions.
Robert’s experience outside the legal profession includes previous experience serving as a senior policy advisor to various federal cabinet ministers, head of the Government of Alberta’s 2011 Transition Team and Chairman of the 2012 Progressive Conservative Provincial Election Campaign, and playing both chess and poker at a professional level.
