Merritt McAlister specializes in representing clients at the appellate stage in federal appellate courts and courts of last resort throughout the country. She is a former law clerk to judges on the Supreme Court of the United States and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Merritt is the only Atlanta-based member of our national appellate practice, which has been recognized as a leading practice by Chambers, Law360 and Legal 500.
Merritt advises clients on pre-litigation legal strategy, evaluating legal arguments for appeal, and strategic procedural and substantive issues in complex litigation. She has successfully appealed and defended dozens of appeals throughout the country, with a particular focus on appeals to the Eleventh Circuit and the Georgia state appellate courts.
Merritt also maintains an active pro bono practice focused on appellate-level representation in the Eleventh Circuit. She frequently accepts appointed cases involving criminal, federal habeas corpus and civil rights issues.
Recently named to Benchmark Litigation’s Under 40 Hot List, Merritt is an elected member of the American Law Institute. She was profiled as a Woman Making a Mark by Atlanta Magazine in 2015.
