Melanie Baird is a partner at Lenczner Slaght.
Melanie's diverse commercial litigation practice encompasses intellectual property, insurance, professional liability, class actions, product liability, securities and technology. Melanie has appeared before all levels of the Ontario and Federal Courts as well as acting as counsel in mediations and private arbitrations.
Melanie's intellectual property practice includes patent and Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) proceedings, as well as trademark and copyright matters. Melanie acted as counsel in the first biologic and the first biosimilar drug patent cases in Canada. Melanie has worked extensively with pharmaceutical companies on patent, civil and commercial cases and is intimately familiar with the industry and the business of pharma companies. She is a registered trade-mark agent in Canada.
Melanie leverages her diverse experience in a wide range of commercial litigation fields to provide unique insight and bring strategic depth to her insurance practice. In particular, Melanie specializes in litigating on behalf of insured professional firms in complicated negligence matters, including negotiating and structuring sophisticated resolutions.
Melanie also has experience in public and private mergers and acquisitions involving technology or other significant intellectual property assets, IP and IT licensing and corporate governance with a focus on technology companies. She previously completed a secondment to the enforcement branch of the Ontario Securities Commission and a secondment with the legal marketing and trade-mark departments of Research in Motion Limited (RIM).
