Jonah M. Knobler is a Partner in Patterson Belknap’s Litigation Department. His practice centers on class action defense, false advertising litigation, and food-and-drug law.
Mr. Knobler represents some of the nation’s best-known food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and supplement manufacturers—often in high-stakes complex proceedings, including class actions and multi-district litigation. He has litigated at all levels of the state and federal judiciary, including the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Knobler has helped clients defeat consumer and third-party-payor class actions with many millions or even billions of dollars in controversy; favorably resolve major competitor disputes; and prevail on appeals with industry-wide importance.
Mr. Knobler developed, launched, and co-edits Misbranded (http://www.misbrandedblog.com), a false advertising blog focusing on FDA-regulated products. He tweets regularly (@jonahknobler) about developments in class action and food-and-drug law. His commentary has been published in Bloomberg Law, Law360, the New York Law Journal, and the Washington Legal Foundation Legal Opinion Letter, among other places, and his writings have been cited in over 20 law review articles, a leading treatise, and several judicial opinions.
Mr. Knobler has an active pro bono practice, presently focusing on LGBTQ+ issues and voting rights. He was Supreme Court co-counsel for the plaintiffs in Common Cause v. Rucho, the North Carolina partisan gerrymandering case. He has also filed amicus briefs in a number of high-profile cases, including Evenwel v. Abbott (one-person-one-vote), Obergefell v. Hodges (marriage equality), and Gloucester County School Board v. G.G. (transgender rights).
Mr. Knobler has been named to Benchmark Litigation’s “Under 40 Hotlist” in 2017, 2018, and 2019. In 2018, the National LGBT Bar named him one of the “40 Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40” who have “distinguished themselves in their field and have demonstrated a profound commitment to LGBT equality.” He has also been named a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers each year from 2013 through 2019.
Mr. Knobler received his J.D. from Harvard Law School, cum laude. He received his B.A. from Harvard University, cum laude, and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society. From 2009 to 2010, Mr. Knobler served as a Law Clerk to the Hon. Danny J. Boggs, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. From 2008 to 2009, he served as a Law Clerk to the Hon. Frederic Block of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
