Andrew Sunter, Partner at Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP, is a senior litigation lawyer whose practice focuses on complex, high‑stakes commercial disputes. He regularly acts for public and private companies, boards of directors, and shareholders in matters involving commercial, construction, energy, securities, and regulatory disputes, as well as corporate governance and class action litigation. Andrew has significant experience litigating oil and gas operating, royalty, joint venture, and accounting disputes, and has acted in major construction matters involving complex engineering and procurement issues.

Andrew also advises clients on securities and shareholder litigation, including oppression claims, secondary market misrepresentation, takeover disputes, and hostile proxy contests. He has appeared as lead counsel before courts in Alberta and Ontario, the Alberta Court of Appeal, administrative tribunals, and in domestic and international commercial arbitrations.

  • Cenovus Energy hostile takeover of MEG Energy – Counsel to MEG Energy Corp. and its board of directors in its $8.6 billion acquisition by Cenovus Energy, which closed on November 13, 2025, following an unsolicited take‑over bid from Strathcona Resources and strategic review process.

  • Ganong v Northwynd REIT et al – Counsel for the plaintiff class members in this class action certified in 2021. Hundreds of unitholders who invested over $40 million alleged that approximately $40 million in contingent assets were improperly transferred to a holding company for no consideration. A favourable settlement was reached in November 2024, with distribution expected in 2025.

  • Brookfield Infrastructure Partners L.P's $6.8 billion acquisition of Inter Pipeline Ltd. – Counsel to Inter Pipeline Ltd. in its $6.8 billion acquisition by Brookfield Infrastructure Partners L.P pursuant to a statutory plan of arrangement.
