Brian’s broad practice spans Aboriginal law, commercial litigation, competition law, criminal law, professional discipline, general civil litigation, and administrative and regulatory law.
His clients include First Nations, municipalities, private sector entities and public officials (both elected and non-elected), as well as numerous regulators and administrative agencies.
He has frequently acted as counsel at federal and provincial commissions of inquiry.
Since 2013, Brian has served as counsel to the judges of the nine provincial and territorial superior courts that approved and continue to administer the historic Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. His work in Aboriginal law includes acting for seven First Nations in the 68-day trial of the past compensation (damages) phase of the trial in Red Rock First Nation et al. v. Attorney General of Canada et al. in 2023.
Brian regularly represents federally appointed judges in connection with matters before the Canadian Judicial Council.
Brian has served as adjunct faculty at Western University’s faculty of law and at Osgoode Hall Law School.
Brian is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a Fellow, Director, and Executive Committee member of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He is also an Honorary Overseas Member of the (U.K.) Commercial Bar Association (ComBAR). From 2018-2019, Brian was president of The Advocates’ Society, an organization comprised of more than 6,000 members from across Canada.
In 2022, Brian received the Law Society Medal in recognition of his excellence as counsel.
