Biography
Gautam Chawla is a Partner and the Delhi office head at Trilegal. He is a part of the competition law practice. With over 14 years of experience, he advises Indian and multinational clients on a wide range of competition law matters, including complex merger control, restrictive practices, abuse of dominance, cartel investigations, and compliance across sectors such as oil and gas, telecommunications, media, power, ports, aviation, insurance, banking, steel, textiles, e-commerce, travel bookings, and retail.

Gautam also represents clients in contentious matters and regularly appears before the Competition Commission of India (CCI), the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), and the Supreme Court of India.
Recent matter/case highlights
  • Represented Delhi International Airport Limited (“DIAL”) and GMR Airports Limited (“GMR”) on the competition law aspects before the Competition Commission of India (“CCI”). The CCI closed the matter at the threshold stage and held that there was not even a prima facie case of violation of the Competition Act, 2002 by DIAL (or GMR), necessary for the direction of investigation. The CCI also rejected the prayer for interim relief.
  • Represented Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (“G&B”) before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (“NCLAT”), challenging the CCI’s order, wherein it was held that G&B was allegedly engaged in a cartel with its competitors. The NCLAT passed an order reducing the penalty imposed by the CCI on G&B, by 50%.
  • Represented and led the defence for NTPC Limited (i.e., one of India’s largest integrated power companies) before the NCLAT and successfully secured a stay on a penalty order passed by the CCI in relation to gun-jumping.
  • Represented Walmart’s Indian subsidiary, i.e., Flipkart Internet Private Limited, on allegations of anti-competitive vertical agreements in an ongoing investigation before the CCI.
