Gustavo da Rocha Schmidt is a founding Partner of Schmidt, Lourenço, Kingston Advogados Associados and head of the Firm’s Civil, Commercial and Public Law Litigation and Arbitration practices.
Since 2008, Gustavo is a full Professor of Law at Fundação Getúlio Vargas – FGV-Rio, lecturing Constitutional Law and other optional subjects in the fields of Arbitration and Public Policies. He is a Master of Laws (LL.M) from New York University – NYU (2007-2008) and holds a second Master’s degree in Regulatory Law from Fundação Getúlio Vargas – FGV Rio (2014/2015). His Law degree (LL.B) is from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro – PUC-Rio (1994/2001).
Recently, Gustavo published his new book Comentários à Lei de Arbitragem ("Comments to Brazilian Arbitration Act"), along with Daniel Ferreira and Rafael Oliveira. Gustavo is also author of the book Arbitragem na Administração Pública (“Arbitration in Public Administration”) and several articles reflecting his studies in Arbitration and Constitutional Law.
He is President of CBMA – Centro Brasileiro de Mediação e Arbitragem (2014-present), one of Brazil’s top five arbitration and mediation institutions, managing dozens of procedures yearly, and also presides the BRICS Arbitration Commission from the Federal Brazilian Bar Association (OAB Federal)
His Arbitration and Litigation practices were acknowledged over the last years, being individually appointed in important national and international legal rankings. Also, Gustavo has been awarded several medals from different institutions, public and private, over his years of practice.
As head of Litigation and Arbitration practices, Gustavo is responsible for some of the Firm’s main complex, strategic cases both in private and public sectors, and recently attained a condemnation, on his client’s behalf, of more than 4 (four) billion Reais, adjusted for inflation, which rendered international recognition.
