Jafar Alam

Jafar’s areas of expertise are commercial and regulatory litigation and arbitration. He has diverse experience handling matters ranging from tender disputes, natural resource and environmental disputes, EPC disputes, and telecom, technology and electricity disputes before various fora including the Supreme Court of India, High Courts and various tribunals.

He frequently appears and leads oral arguments in regulatory disputes of various hues including electricity, oil & gas, telecom, securities and anti-trust disputes. He routinely handles arbitrations, both ad hoc and institutional, and has appeared before various courts in arbitration-related proceedings. He also advises on policy issues in the electricity, telecom and oil & gas sectors.

• Advised a major Indian steel manufacturer in managing multiple contentious issues arising with Indian and foreign parties under an EPC contract for establishing a sinter plant, involving risk purchase and damages claims exceeding USD 250 million.
• Represented a major Indian telecom company in arbitration defending claims of approximately USD 88 million under EPC and O&M contracts relating to telecom tower infrastructure across four Indian states.
• Represented a multinational company before the Supreme Court of India concerning alleged constitutional violations of privacy rights relating to financial information, with significant implications for the banking sector.
• Represented a calcining company before the Andhra Pradesh High Court in a constitutional challenge concerning statutory classification of power plants for customs duty purposes, with potential regulatory, operational and financial implications for the industry.
