Stephen Fishbein is an accomplished trial lawyer with extensive experience in white-collar criminal defense, securities litigation, antitrust matters, compliance issues and internal investigations. He is recognized for achieving significant trial victories, including successful representations of defendants in criminal insider trading trials and securing a USD 44 million jury verdict for a plaintiff in a trade secret misappropriation case.
Stephen has deep expertise in regulatory compliance and investigations. Notably, he was appointed by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as the independent compliance monitor for Baker Hughes, Inc. in what was then the largest Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) matter on record.
Throughout his career, Stephen has represented individuals and corporations in a broad spectrum of criminal and regulatory matters, with a particular emphasis on securities fraud and other financial crimes. He served as trial and appellate counsel for Todd Newman in the landmark United States v. Newman insider trading case, obtaining a complete exoneration for his client in a Second Circuit decision that established important standards for insider trading prosecutions.
Stephen also represented Chris Worrall in United States v. Blaszczak, securing acquittals on 14 of 16 counts at trial and ultimately achieving reversal of the remaining convictions on appeal, resulting in dismissal of all charges against his client.
His experience further includes leading multinational investigations and regulatory matters, including representation of Citigroup in the Banamex/Oceanografia fraud matter, representation of Bilfinger SE in FCPA investigations and a deferred prosecution agreement with the DOJ, and serving as the DOJ- and SEC-appointed compliance monitor for Baker Hughes.
