Eric Sherkin is an experienced commercial litigation lawyer with a broad range of exper-tise across many areas of practice, and has appeared before all levels of court in Ontario. His experience touches upon issues including creditors’ remedies and contract disputes, shareholder remedies and complex commercial litigation, fraud recovery, libel and slan-der, professional negligence, and a growing practice in municipal/assessment litigation. Eric also assists clients in developing their own dispute resolution systems and provides risk management advice. He has been named a Future Star by Benchmark Litigation and a Thomson Reuters Stand-out Lawyer.

Eric provides legal services in the areas of:

General commercial litigation: acting for plaintiffs and defendants on commercial dis-putes, on a strategic and client-focused basis, to achieve optimal results in a pragmatic way.

Creditors’ remedies: acting for creditors on breach of contract claims, injuctions and complex fraud recovery, collections, insolvencies and related matters.

Libel and slander: advising and assisting clients in defamation claims, with an emphasis on online defamation including in the social media realm.

Property tax: assisting property owners with a variety of legal issues related to property tax assessments and appeals.

Eric has published articles on a wide array of topics. He is a co-author of the text Creditors’ Remedies in Ontario, and is also a contributing author to the chapter on receiverships in Canadian Forms and Precedents–Debtor/Creditor. Eric has also served as a panelist for continuing legal education programs with The Advocates’ Society.

While in law school, Eric worked at the National Hockey League Players’ Association where he was actively involved in the salary arbitration process and assisted with the drafting of the league’s collective bargaining agreement. Eric is a passionate sports fan and has served as updating author for the chapter on professional sports in the publication Entertainment Law in Canada. In law school, Eric was awarded the Michael Allen Harte Award for combining strong academic achievement with significant contributions to the law school community.

Eric is an active member of his community. He is the past co-chair of the Young Lawyers division of the United Jewish Appeal, and is a two-time co-chair of the ICRF’s annual fundraising event for young professionals in support of cancer research. He is happiest spending time with his wife and young son. If they’re busy, he’s happiest on a golf course, ice rink or baseball diamond, or at a Pearl Jam concert.
