Paul is a Partner at BD&P specializing in complex, high-stakes corporate and commercial litigation and arbitration.

He has appeared before trial and appellate courts in Alberta, the Federal Court, and the Supreme Court of Canada, and other tribunals, including the Alberta Securities Com-mission, the Law Society of Alberta, and in commercial arbitrations.

He has extensive experience litigating all types of corporate and shareholder disputes, including representing shareholders, directors and officers in corporate disputes and oppression actions involving breaches of director duties and shareholder exits. He has litigated on behalf of both corporations and departing shareholders in corporate divorces, and defended directors and officers of private and publicly traded companies.

Paul is active in a wide variety of oil and gas and electrical industry disputes. He has broad experience litigating disputes involving termination of oil and gas leases, operator issues, joint venture accounting, contractual disputes and force majeure claims.

Paul has also acted for and against investment advisors and dealers, and defended public companies and individuals in Canadian Securities Commission investigations and hearings. He also instituted class proceedings on behalf of investors and in product liability cases.

He has litigated constitutional division of powers issues, on behalf of the Government of Alberta and intervenors, including cases involving the scope of interprovincial free trade under the Canadian Constitution and a reference that considered British Columbia’s ability to regulate the interprovincial transport of oil and gas.

Paul clerked at the Court of Appeal of Alberta, and has a BCL with distinction from the University of Oxford. He is a director of the Alberta Law Foundation and other non-profits.
