Firm overview

Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, formed in June 2025 as a result of the combination of Kramer Levin and Herbert Smith Freehills, is a global legal powerhouse, where our ambition is to help you achieve your goals.

As a fully integrated transatlantic and transpacific firm, we are where you need us to be. Our footprint is extensive and committed across the world’s largest markets, key financial centers and major growth hubs.

Exceptional client service and the pursuit of excellence are at our core. We invest in and care about our client relationships, which is why so many are longstanding. We enjoy breaking new ground, as we have for over 170 years.

In the US, with offices in New York, Washington DC and Silicon Valley, we deliver sophisticated legal solutions aligned with our clients’ most critical business objectives across the country and around the world. Our clients benefit from substantive resources in New York's global finance hub as well as our presence in Washington, DC, the center of US policy and regulation and in Silicon Valley’s thriving tech economy.

Our litigation team represents foreign and domestic companies and individuals against federal criminal charges and investigations by the US Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission and other governmental authorities and regulators. We perform early case assessment to align resources with outcomes, and ensure matters are resolved quickly; where cases should be litigated, we do so efficiently and fight to win. Aside from a formidable record in financial litigation, we also advise on internal investigations, white collar criminal defense and related regulatory proceedings and counsel clients on compliance policies and procedures, especially related to anticorruption and sanctions.

At our best tackling complexity and navigating change, we work alongside you on demanding litigation, exacting regulatory work and complex public and private market transactions. We are recognized as leading in these areas.

We are immersed in the sectors and challenges that impact you including financial services, technology, and consumer in the US, along with energy, infrastructure and resources globally. And we’re focused on areas of growth that affect every business across the world.

All of this is achieved by supporting the growth of our people, who help us deliver on our ambition – which is to help you achieve yours.

Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer: Your goals. Our ambition.

Dispute Resolution
Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer maintains a strong disputes platform spanning commercial, appellate and securities litigation, with notable experience in complex cross-border and emerging-industry matters. Clients consistently highlight the team's strategic approach and execution. One client describes the firm's work as "strategic advice and then expert execution," adding that its lawyers "masterfully develop and craft sophisticated legal arguments." Another praises the firm for assembling "a strong team that helped navigate difficult litigation well."

Washington DC's Roy T. Englert Jr. remains one of the firm's most prominent appellate practitioners. A client describes him as "one of the top appellate lawyers in the US" and "particularly skilled in SCOTUS litigation," while also highlighting the strength of the broader team supporting his matters. Englert frequently works alongside fellow Washington DC partner Brandon L. Arnold, who continues to play a leading role in significant commercial and securities disputes. Arnold recently represented Las Vegas Sands Corporation and its affiliates in Asian American Entertainment Corp. v. LVS (Nevada) International Holdings, a long-running cross-border dispute that concluded with a successful defense judgment and subsequent appellate victory.

The firm's New York bench is equally active in high-value litigation. New York-based Daniel B. Goldman, Kerri Ann Law and Claudia Pak acted in EIG Energy Fund XIV, L.P. et al. v. Petróleo Brasileiro S.A., a dispute arising from the "Car Wash" corruption scandal that involved substantial appellate proceedings and ultimately resulted in a disclosed settlement. The matter reflects the firm's ability to navigate complex commercial disputes involving international parties, sovereign immunity issues and significant financial exposure.

The group has also demonstrated experience handling disputes arising from evolving business sectors. Washington DC partners Ariel N. Lavinbuk and Arnold acted in Celsius Network Limited, et al. v. Tether Limited, et al., a cryptocurrency-related dispute involving more than $5 billion and approximately 40,000 Bitcoin. A client credits Lavinbuk with overseeing the matter from start to finish, describing him as "a strong communicator" who was "integral in crafting and making strong arguments" that produced "an excellent result."

Across its practice, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer continues to handle sophisticated litigation spanning appellate advocacy, securities disputes, cross-border controversies and complex commercial matters. Clients particularly emphasize the team's responsiveness, strategic thinking and ability to deliver results in high-stakes engagements.
