Beth Stewart’s practice focuses on white collar criminal defense and complex civil litigation. Beth has had several trials and appellate arguments in both federal and state courts.
Beth’s first major criminal trial was as a member of the team representing United States Senator Ted Stevens, who was indicted on ethics charges fewer than 100 days before he was to stand for re-election. Senator Stevens was ultimately exonerated after it was established that the prosecutors had intentionally withheld exculpatory evidence from the defense. The American Lawyer has described the firm’s work on the case as “one of the best criminal defense performances in memory, resulting in a heightened scrutiny of prosecutors that will affect the Justice Department for years to come.”
Since then, Beth’s criminal defense and enforcement work on behalf of both individuals and corporations has included representing a former CEO of a mortgage company in an SEC enforcement action, representing a corporation in a foreign corrupt practices investigation, and representing a former president of a foreign country in extradition proceedings. Beth’s work has also included several pro bono criminal defense matters.
Beth’s civil practice has included representations of both individuals and corporations in matters ranging from employment to professional liability defense to complex securities and financial services litigation. Most recently, her work has focused on the representation of a Fortune 10 financial institution in complex litigation relating to the residential mortgage crisis.
Benchmark Litigation selected Beth to their 2023 “Future Stars” list. She has been named to Bisnow’s 2015 “Trending 40 Lawyers Under 40” List, and was selected for inclusion to the 2014 Washington, DC Rising Stars list.
Beth was raised in Columbus, Georgia. She received a B.A. from Harvard College, after which she spent two years as a Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company in New York. She graduated from Harvard Law School after serving as an editor on the Harvard Law Review. Prior to joining Williams & Connolly, she served as Special Counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee during the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justices Roberts and Alito.
