Debevoise & Plimpton secured a victory for mining company Tethyan Copper, a joint venture between Antofagasta and Barrick Gold Corporation, against the Islamic Republic of Pakistan before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).

The team won an award of total $6 billion, a combine of $4 billion in damages, $1.75 billion in pre-award interest, and $62 million in costs, before ICSID. This is the second largest ICSID award ever rendered.

Tethyan Copper’s claims resulted from Pakistan’s denial of a mining lease for the Reko Diq project in 2011, in violation of the Australia-Pakistan Bilateral Investment Treaty.

Debevoise & Plimpton’s team was led by partners Donald Donovan, Mark Friedman, Dietmar Prager, and Natalie Reid.
