Manfred Doess, GC of Volkswagen, also traveled from Germany to attend the event, delivering an emotional and conciliatory speech following the announcement of the final impact case of the evening, the landmark April 2016 $14 billion settlement in the Volkswagen class action, for which lead private practice counsel on both sides (Sullivan & Cromwell and Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein) collected a rare double award. Volkswagen was awarded honorary in-house status for this matter.
